Cumin (Cominum Cyminum) is a plant of the Apiaceae family like caraway. It is native to the Mediterranean basin and its use is widely distributed in Asian, Arabic and Mediterranean cuisine, especially in Andalusia. Cumin has a very characteristic taste and smell, it is slightly bitter and a little spicy, its penetrating scent is sweet and unmistakable. The main properties of this spice are similar to those of fennel, green anise or caraway as they belong to the same family, so it is used as a diuretic, carminative, anthelmintic, helps to whet the appetite, improves meteorism (gas) and its oil has sedative power (formerly used for toothache). It is also considered a food that improves estrogen production.
