Blood orange or red orange is a variety of the sweet orange with dark red flesh. It is the result of a mutation in the common orange under specific conditions. This distinctive shade is due to the presence of anthocyanins, a compound with antioxidant properties, common in many flowers and fruits, but rare in citrus fruits. Anthocyanins are a natural antioxidant and water-soluble pigment that also protects from ultraviolet light.
Blood orange extract has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant components. As a cosmetic ingredient, and thanks to these substances, it provides protection from oxidative stress in the skin. On the other hand, its aromatic essence is also extracted by cold-pressing the peel or by distillation. In aromatherapy, blood orange essence helps to promote sleep, relieve nervousness or stress and is also invigorating (complementary actions). It has a sweet, fresh, vibrant and fruity scent.
Store essential oils in a cool, dry place to avoid premature oxidation (citrus essences oxidise similarly vegetable oils). It should not be used before sunbathing as it may cause slight stains on the skin. If in doubt, consult a healthcare professional.
