Oily skin is characterised by excessive sebum production by the sebaceous glands, which are located close to the hair follicle and are responsible for producing this substance that provides the skin with protective lipids. Oily skin also may show an accelerated proliferation of keratinocytes, cells that contain keratin.
This abnormal growth leads to the hardening of the outer layer of the skin and a thickened skin appearance. If the pores become clogged, lesions in the form of blackheads, pimples or microcomedones will appear. This can lead to other skin conditions such as acne. But why does this imbalance occur and what can we do about it? It can happen due to hormonal variations, the action of external agents, the use of unsuitable cosmetics or a genetic condition.
Whatever the case, this type of skin can be sensitive when it becomes unbalanced and requires specific cosmetic products with sebum-regulating and antiseptic ingredients to prevent the overgrowth of microorganisms that can worsen the condition. Ingredients that are also antioxidants, such as niacinamide, provide an anti-inflammatory effect. Ultra-light, fast-absorbing or mattifying textures are good options for this skin type.
Sunscreen is also essential and even more so for oily skin. The effects of the sun can cause greater skin dehydration and a rebound pro-oxidant effect, which will stimulate the activity of the sebaceous glands and, consequently, cause more obstructions. In case you are following a specific medical treatment for acne, the importance of sunscreen increases.
