A condom or prophylactic is a single-use contraceptive method that prevents unwanted pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). There are male and female condoms. They are also available in different sizes, materials and finishes to suit the needs of the user and ensure safe sex.
They can be combined with lubricants to facilitate penetration. It is important to place the condom before any genital contact to prevent pre-ejaculatory secretions from reaching the vaginal cavity and thus reduce the likelihood of contracting an STD. Condoms can also be used as a barrier during oral sex. On the other hand, it is not advisable to use more than one condom at a time. The friction between them could cause them to break or damage their surface, reducing their effectiveness.
It is also not advisable to use a female condom and a male condom during the same sexual intercourse. On the other hand, condoms are compatible with other contraceptive methods prescribed by the doctor, such as IUD, the contraceptive pill or the contraceptive ring.
