Juniper berries, also called juniper berries or nebrinas, is the flavoring of gin, in fact, is the French name of this juniper (genévrier) which gave its name to this drink. Juniper is found in mountainous areas, especially in the cold areas of Europe, Asia and North America. Apart from its culinary properties, juniper berries are highly valued for their medicinal properties, it is believed to increase physical endurance, it is also given digestive, balsamic, expectorant, diuretic or antiseptic properties among others. An essential oil is extracted from the berries that is used in aromatherapy and perfumery, which is rich in active principles (pipene and borneol), inosite, a glycoside (flavone), juniperine and a bitter principle; they have numerous properties: tonic, sudorific, stomachic and digestive, and are also very suitable for treating kidney and bladder disorders, against gout and rheumatism, in ear affections, and reduction of cholesterol and sugar levels. In cooking, juniper berries are ideal for flavouring meat dishes.
Add one teaspoon, per 250ml of water, in a cup, teapot or infuser ball. Steep the tea, filter if necessary and drink hot or cold. Read the directions on the package before brewing. Water temperature, as well as steeping time, may vary according to the type of tea or infusion.
