Xylitol, also known as birch sugar, is a polyol, or sugar alcohol. It is obtained by reducing xylose sugar. Xylose is obtained commercially by hydrolysis of the hemicellulose of birch wood. It has a very low caloric value.

It is a healthy option to conventional chewing gums.
