Verbena leaves contain a heteroside, verbenaloside. It also has cardiotonic heterosides, tannins, mucilages, saponins, a bitter heteroside, mineral salts and essential oil, rich in citral. Its essence is obtained from the leaves. Verbena is used as a relaxant, although if the dose is exceeded, it can cause vomiting. Verbena can also act as an antispasmodic and antipyretic, that is, as a remedy to reduce fever, as well as having the ability to relieve pain from bruises or wounds.
