Pharmaceutical Advice

Red rice yeast or Monascus purpureus is a type of fungus that grows on rice and ferments it, turning it reddish. Since the Ming Dynasty it has been included in the Chinese pharmacopoeia and has been associated with properties for the relief of digestive and circulatory problems. The beneficial effect of red yeast rice is related to substances generated during its fermentation: monacolins and, in particular, monacolin K.

These substances help to limit the synthesis of endogenous cholesterol in the body. In addition, red yeast rice contains other compounds such as isoflavones and sterols which enhance its beneficial antioxidant effect. Before taking a red yeast rice supplement, a comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment by your doctor is necessary. Lifestyle habits are the first thing to look out for when cholesterol is high: eat a balanced diet and be physically active.

Remember that supplementation with red yeast rice is not indicated if you are already being treated for hypercholesterolaemia with medication. Nor should it be taken with another food supplement containing the same ingredient. Do not take more than 3 mg of monacolins per day and follow all labelling instructions. This supplement is not indicated for use in children, during pregnancy/breastfeeding, or by those over 70 years of age. If you have any questions or experience any undesirable effects, please consult a healthcare professional.
